Brief

Copyright is a legal right granted to the creators of original intellectual works. It protects the expression of ideas that are fixed in a tangible form, such as writing, music, art, or film.

Copyright gives the creator exclusive rights to reproduce, adapt, translate, perform, distribute, and publicly display their work.
In India, copyright is governed by the Copyright Act, 1957.
Registration is not mandatory, as protection begins upon creation. However, registration is highly recommended as it provides legal proof of ownership in court.

Term of Copyright Protection

Copyrightable works fall into the following categories:

Literary, Dramatic, Musical or Artistic Works – –

Lifetime of the author + 60 years.

Anonymous & Pseudonymous Works – –

60 years from the year of first publication

Government & Public Undertaking Works – –

60 years from publication

International Organization Works – –

60 years from publication

Sound Recordings & Films - –

60 years from the year of publication
