Mr. Karan Thapar is an Indian Revenue Services (IRS) officer of 2009 batch. During his service career spanning over a decade, he has been part of several projects where in collaboration with Industry associations, he has actively participated to bring in Indirect Tax reforms aimed at reducing the burden of compliance and increase transparency in tax administration. During the phase of GST implementation, he was involved in implementation of country-wide IT infrastructure project- SAKSHAM.
He has also actively resorted to use of technology in Tax administration, both for the purpose of tax payer facilitation and also to develop non-invasive methods of tax enforcement and preventing tax evasion. He has rich experience in the field of Financial Investigations, Data Analytics, tax litigation and adjudication and general administration.
Presently, he is serving as Deputy Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. In his role in the department, he is tasked with ensuring India’s national interests are protected in all international and multilateral collaborations. He is also put in charge of strengthening the Design Policy framework and providing administrative support to the five National Institutes of Design (NIDs) and help them emerge as institutes of national and international repute.
In his role in CIPAM he is working towards achieving the objectives enshrined in the National IPR Policy, 2016 and creating an ecosystem in participation with all stakeholders to introduce new-age reforms and strengthen India’s Intellectual Property ecosystem.
